Five Steps to Becoming a Women's Lacrosse Umpire

Step One:  Send an email to LetMeRef@ncwlua.org.  Give us your contact information (name, address, email, phone), and we will use it only to get in touch with you about lacrosse trainings.

Step Two:  Attend an Umpiring Clinic!   The lacrosse season runs from late January to mid-May, with some events occurring in the fall (so-called "Fall Ball").  All umpires in our Association are required to attend an Umpiring Clinic at the start of the season, usually in February.  All umpires are REQUIRED to complete 6 hours of classroom training each season.  Upon completion of classroom training, umpires will be scheduled for field training, during which they will umpire on the field with a mentor/trainer and, if successful, will receive a rating.

Step Three:  Join USLacrosse!  All members are required to join USLacrosse before umpiring any games.  US Lacrosse provides umpires with insurance, rulebooks, and trains the umpires that provide the training.  NEW members will need to join US Lacrosse at the first meeting -- returning umpires must renew their membership with US Lacrosse online (or by mail) prior to the September 1 annual renewal date.

Step Four:  Join NCWLUA!  For a nominal membership fee, you receive training and guaranteed assignments if you receive a rating.  Your membership dues will be subtracted from your first payment for games reffed.  Umpires new to our Association also receive a "starter kit" which contains a whistle, lanyard, flag, and warning cards, to start you on your way.  You need only buy a black-and-white striped shirt, black shorts/kilt, and black shoes.

Step Five:  Register with Arbiter, our assigning software.  After you complete your classroom training we will create an account for you in Arbiter.  You will then just need to login and join the group.  Your assignments to games will come to you via email and will be available for viewing online at http://www.arbitersports.com

CONGRATULATIONS!  If you complete all 5 steps, you are on your way to rewarding career as a certified umpire of women's and girls lacrosse!

If you have questions about NCWLUA or women's lacrosse in general, send your question to:  questions@ncwlua.org and we will get back to you!
